Rotating Specials Menu Update - January 2011

Zippy's Restaurants is starting the new year with a new rotating specials menu, now served from 10:30am - 9:30pm at both the fast food counter and dine-in restaurant!

New to the rotating specials menu for Oahu is Turkey Jook, a hearty rice soup dish that was offered at the dine-in restaurant as a weekend special. Making a return to the rotation is Braised Shortrbs with Jardiniere Sauce. Note: These items are not available on Zippy's Kahului's rotating menu.

You might also notice that on Fridays there are also the following specials available: Hawaiian Plate (Lau Lau & Kalua Pig), Kalua Pig Plate, Lau Lau Plate, and Grilled Mahi. What's more, you can substitute the Kalua Pig in the Hawaiian Plate with select specials on that Friday. See stores for details.

As always, Zippy's Restaurants welcomes your feedback about our rotating specials menu. You can request for a copy of the rotating specials menu from any store location, or you can download it HERE

I miss your "Weekend Specials". Will you resume having them soon? They help with the diversity of your menu offerings.
---- auto-merged, double post ----
Just looked at your daily specials schedule for the months of January, February, and March. It looks somewhat boring with repeat items that pop up on different menus. It sure looks like the daily specials have taken a turn for the worse beginning this month as compared to past specials last year and before.

Good morning, Arnie -

Thank you for your feedback.

1) Thank you for your support of our weekend dine-in specials. Unfortunately, we have discontinued them due to low sales. However, we will still be carrying special menus for occasions such as Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. Also, we will still be offering featured items for you to try from time to time, such as our salads like the Mandarin Orange Salad (available through March 2011).

2) Our daily specials follow a 6-day rotation on a three month schedule, and have done so since the previous year. Changes to the menu can be caused by poor sales on some items, increased interest in a particular item, or even returned due to customer demand. Because of the limited time in each schedule, we are able to adjust the menu to reflect those changes. This is also where your feedback is very important to us, as it assists us in making a better menu schedule overall.

When you say the daily specials have taken for the worst, are there particular items that you feel are repeated more than desired? Are there items you would like to see back in the menu? Is the amount of specials per day acceptable? As always, we welcome your feedback, and thank you for your time.

Jay

Thanks for your response. I really liked the garlic miso chicken. What were some of the other weekend specials that you featured from time to time?

The daily specials that appeared more than once were beef stew and roast turkey. While they are both good, perhaps once a week for each would suffice.

When the same food items is basically offered as a main course as well as a sandwich (chicken cutlet, roast pork, corn beef, meat loaf, and teri pork), you should add another special for those days. There isn't much variety offered when something is prepared in two different forms.

Good morning, thank you for the feedback. Other featured items from our weekend specials at our dine-in restaurant included the BBQ Trio and Country Chicken with Mushroom Gravy and much more. Some of the items have been moved to our regular rotating menu, including the Turkey Jook, and Braised Shortribs.

Thank you for your feedback regarding the sandwiches, and about the variety, and they will be forwarded to our menu planning committee.

Thank you for your time,

Jay

Yes, country chicken was always a good option on the menu. The crispy salmon chazuke was a winner also. Thanks for having this forum, as well as providing real interactive discussions!

Arnie - You're welcome! Our crispy salmon chazuke has been getting positive feedback, and may appear from time to time as a "rainy day" special at our dine-in restaurants.

It's always a pleasure to do the forum when our customers have interactive discussions, it helps us to see where we can improve or what to try! Thank you and all of our forum members for your participation!

Thank you for your time,

Jay

Hi ... Back to posting after seeing that the same daily specials have been extended to April. Has there been cutbacks made in the managerial staffing? Seems there's some cost-cutting going on at Zippy's with the cancellation of weekend specials and keeping the same daily specials from the first quarter for another month. Someone's not doing their job.

Thank you Arnie for your feedback. In order to effectively answer your questions, I answered it in three parts:

1. Are there cutbacks made in the managerial staffing?

No, Zippy's Restaurants have not cut back on the manager scheduling, however, there may have been specific situations where managers were unable to work for a period of time. Of course, we have had managers transferred to different stores and other positions, and some have left, but we still require management coverage throughout the store operating hours.

2. Why were the weekend specials cancelled?

The weekend specials were cancelled because the sales of these items were low. We decided to revise this concept to adding on more daily specials rather than only on the weekends. We will be testing this change with the upcoming daily specials revision in May.

3. Why was the daily specials extended for another month?

The daily specials menu was extended for another month since we were looking to make some changes to the daily rotating menu. Rather than change the menu while we were still in the process, we decided to extend it for another month. We will be offering a revised daily rotating menu that will start May 2nd.

Thank you again for your feedback!

Jay
